My Alkaline Diet!

I recently posted a photo on my instagram showing my love for a new product that I’ve been introduced to called, The Super Elixir from Welleco. It’s a bit tricky to explain all the reasons why I love this product over instagram so I thought I would take to my blog and use this opportunity to share with you one of my dieting and body cleansing secrets. The Alkaline Diet.

‘The concept of an alkaline diet has been around for many years. Fundamentally it suggests that we increase consumption of alkalising foods and reduce our consumption of acidifying foods.’ - alkaway.com.au

To keep it simple, food can be broken up in to two different types. Food that breaks down acidic in the stomach, and food that breaks down alkaline in the stomach. These foods are different to foods that are just acidic like tomatoes and lemons for example. Both are acidic foods, but alkaline forming when digested. So it can be a bit confusing, but just understand that food can change state as the body digests it.

‘The classic example every alkaline diet advocate refers to is the lemon. Stick a pH test probe into a lemon and you’ll see it is strongly acidic. But drink lemon juice (also highly acidic) and your body will burn up the acids in energy creation but leave the alkaline minerals in what some people call ‘alkaline ash’. This net alkaline residue forms the basis of your body’s body building, anti-inflammation program, immunity and much, much more.’ - alkaway.com.au

Now, the body is naturally alkaline. Our amazing body takes everything we put in it, and uses the enzymes etc that naturally occur to alkalise everything for easy absorption. The Alkaline diet offers your body foods that are already alkaline and easy for the body to absorb. This means that the energy required to turn your food and drink to alkaline is no longer required, and the body can operate at a ‘higher level’. So your skin improves, digestion improves, you sleep better, you recover and heal quicker and this diet is often recommended to people suffering through cancer as it has been known to allow to body to eat its damaged cells. Basically magic.

So, how do you do it? You simply re-educate yourself on food, find some new recipes, give up coffee, sugar, meat and alcohol and follow through with your commitment to this health project. I promise you will feel results. A lot of diets go on about seeing results, but being at a fit and healthy weight I was never interested in dieting for weight-loss. I prefer to get other benefits from a diet with weight maintenance, rather than weight loss, being a key for me. Don’t get me wrong though, if you're on the larger side, eating an alkaline diet can see you lose weight! There are plenty of success stories all over the internet about people who have experienced dramatic weight loss from a two week alkaline cleanse. And the best bit is, you can eat as much as you like! You just have to choose the right foods. When I do the 2 week alkaline cleanse I find that my body responds with a lack of bloating and I may shed 3 or 4 kgs from my legs and mid section. For me, it’s a noticeable difference, but for the general public I doubt you guys would notice much. What I really notice though, is a change in my mental clarity, vitality, skin, sleep, cravings and overall energy. I feel fresh, awake and light.

Now, before I get to the supplements that I take while on this diet/cleanse, I thought i’d share the types of foods you can eat while taking on this challenge! And it really can be a challenge. When I first started I struggled to eat out because it’s quite overwhelming learning what I could and couldn’t have. But with more vegan restaurants opening up, and my understanding of the right foods, I have managed to find some great dining out options in Sydney (p.s. There are heaps in LA!). As for your shopping list though, there are several lists all over the internet but I have shared my favourite below. This helps you determine what is a yay and what is a nay.

There are also a growing amount of recipes online. Some examples can be found here. Generally when cooking and shopping the best thing to be aware of with this diet is the additives in canned food. Even some tinned tomatoes may have additives that aren't on your approved food list. So watch out for that and try and cook your food yourself. Keep it fresh and clean and your body will thank you.

So, the little helpers. The added supplements that can help strengthen your alkalinity and provide you with added nutrients. My go to for the 2 week cleanse that I've mentioned is Living Lean. This is a pretty intense diet shock and not only requires you sticking to the approved food, but also upping your water intake to 4 litres. You will however, feel incredible. The program comes with guide books, PH testing strips to check your progress, and the alkalising formula that you add to every litre of water. This program is a bit different to the new Super Elixir i’ve just started. Super Elixir is more for your everyday maintenance, so would be perfect for once you've finished the cleanse and helped get your body functioning at its highest level. It recommends a smaller dosage mixed in with your water or smoothie every day. It tastes pretty good considering all the greens that are blended up in to the mixture, and if it’s anything like the other Living Lean mixture, my body should start the crave it and enjoy the taste more as it becomes more alkaline.

Currently, I am not on the cleanse and I am just focusing on eating as many alkaline foods as possible. I have cut out coffee, alcohol, meat and I'm working towards sugar (it’s a tough challenge). I’d love to know if you've tried eating alkaline or tried either of the alkalising green products I've mentioned above! As you can probably tell, I’m a pretty big fan of this way of eating!
